KI-051 Japanese kimekomi figurine of a young lady reading a book, 1930's

Very nice Japanese antique doll in kimekomi technique represents a young noble lady.
Young lady is dressed in beige color silk kimono with red lining and very rich silk-brocaded kimono gown uchikake which is thrown off from one of her shoulder.
Her thoughtful face face is finished in gofun (crashed oyster shell) and hand-painted artistically. Her long black hair combed in Heian era style and embellished with ribbons and long tortoise shell hair pin. She pouted her head on her hand and thought. A few books lie beside her on the red pad.
It is possible that the doll represents famous poetess of Heian period of Japanese history Murasaki Shikibu (紫 式部 aka Lady Murasaki). This doll crafted about 1930's ensuring the finest quality and craftsmanship.
Japanese kimekomi dolls have carved base of wood, or paulownia sawdust mixed with glue. A design of different patterned cloth made of silk brocade with traditional Japanese design scraps is planned out, and the base is grooved so that the edges of the cloth can be hidden in the grooves. The cloth is glued on and the edges tucked in. The head and hands of the doll are usually finished with gofun (crashed oyster shell) and hand-painted, the hair may be a part of the molded head or be a separate wig. These lovely Japanese traditional kimekomi dolls have become a very popular for collection.
