Japanese vintage kimekomi doll of a Long Hair Beauty Princess,
1950's
Finely modeled Japanese
kimekomi doll
represents young princess with long black hair dressed in
rich 12- layered kimono 'juni hitoe' and red hakama
as it was in fashion of Heian era (794 to 1185) for
noble woman. Princess sits on her lap and holds in
her one hand high-status symbol - cypress folding fan closed
and wrapped by colorful silk long ropes. Her other hand
is hidden inside a wide kimono sleeve.
The doll made around 1950's by famous Japanese artist. Princess's
face is finished in gofun (crashed oyster shell)
and hand-painted tenderly.
Japanese kimekomi dolls have carved base of wood,
or paulownia sawdust mixed with glue. A design of different
patterned cloth made of silk brocade with traditional Japanese
design scraps is planned out, and the base is grooved so
that the edges of the cloth can be hidden in the grooves.
The cloth is glued on and the edges tucked in. The head
and hands of the doll are usually finished with gofun
(crashed oyster shell) and hand-painted, the hair may be
a part of the molded head or be a separate wig. These lovely
Japanese traditional kimekomi dolls have become a
very popular for collection.
