Japanese vintage kimekomi doll of young aristocrat of Heian
era dancing SEI- KAI-HA or War Dance, about 1950's
Very rare Japanese vintage doll made traditionally in
kimekomi
technique represents young courtier of Heian era (794 to
1185) dressed with very rich silk brocaded clothes
and court's black lacquered hat, adorned with peony flowers and with
big sword attached to his belt. His kariginu
jacket with wide sleeves in dark-blue color
designed with waves and gold cherry blossom motif and
his gold kimono designed with fishes, plants and waves. He performs special
SEI KAI HA Dance for New Year celebration.
Young man's face finished
in gofun (crashed oyster shell) and delicate hand-painted.
This bright doll was crafted about 1950's (Showa period) ensuring the
finest quality and craftsmanship. Black lacquered stand come with.
Japanese kimekomi dolls have carved base of wood, or paulownia sawdust mixed with glue. A design of
different patterned cloth made of silk brocade with traditional
Japanese design scraps is planned out, and the base is grooved
so that the edges of the cloth can be hidden in the grooves.
The cloth is glued on and the edges tucked in. The head
and hands of the doll are usually finished with gofun
(crashed oyster shell) and hand-painted, the hair may be a part of the molded
head or be a separate wig. These artistically crafted Japanese
traditional kimekomi dolls have become
a very popular for collection.

taste.
